Interlibrary Loan FAQ's
What is an Interlibrary Loan? (ILL)
Interlibrary loan is borrowing materials from another library when the ANC Library does not have the material you are seeking. ILL's can be requested by any current ANC Library patron who is in good standing (has a current patron card on file, has previously checked out and returned materials and does not have any materials overdue.) New patrons, who have not previously checked out a book then returned it are not eligible for interlibrary loan services.
When is an Interlibrary Loan used?
ILLs are used when all of the following conditions apply:
When the library does not own a requested book or does not subscribe to a requested magazine or journal, and there is no acceptable substitute.
When a request does not conflict with U.S. copyright laws.
For ANC Students: request will not be processed if the item is required in less 2 weeks. (If you are writing a paper that is due in one week, we will not fill the request.)
What can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan?
Aaniiih Nakoda College Library is able to provide interlibrary loans for most books and items in other media, but there are exceptions:
1. Materials that have been published within one year or located in foreign countries
2. Materials that do not circulate (Reference, genealogical materials, etc.);
3. Materials limited by licensing agreements; and,
4. Equipment
How long does an Interlibrary Loan take?
It depends on the lending library. Books take an average of twelve days. Photocopies of articles range from one day to two weeks; articles are normally e-mailed, or, they are mailed to the library.
What is the cost?
Typically the cost to the patron is $0. The library absorbs the delivery expense for the ILL. Occasionally a lending library charges, which the patron would be responsible for, but we ask the patron for permission before any charges are incurred. If an item is returned late, late fines are determined by the lending library and beyond the control of ANC Library. If the ILL item is lost or destroyed, the patron is responsible for the replacement cost, plus any processing fees charged by the lending library.
How long may I keep the Interlibrary Loan?
The lending library sets the loan period. For books this is normally two to three weeks. Journal articles are usually photocopies and are therefore yours to keep.
Is there a limit on the number of Interlibrary Loan requests?
Yes. The limit is three loan requests at any one time.

NOTICE: WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United Sates Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions copyrighted material.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy of other reproduction. One of these specified condition is that the photocopy of reproduction is not to “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research”. If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law
